The Astronomy of Baktun 13: December 21, 2012

(a synopsis of my book Maya Cosmogenesis 2012 sent to scholars in mid-1997)

John Major Jenkins

This one-page synopsis of my forthcoming book Maya Cosmogenesis 2012 was sent to selected Maya scholars in mid-1997, along with an invitation to received a pre-press review copy of my book. A high-resolution picture of the one-page synopsis is here: The piece is titled "The Astronomy of Baktun 13: December 21st, 2012 CE". It contains my phone number, email, website, and PO Box (all now invalid and expired).

This little webpage is attached to my essay called "Mayanism: An Ideological Prison Invented by John Hoopes" (, where I discuss my early letters and mterials sent to John B. Carlson, Chief Editor of the Archaeoastronomy Journal who, many years later (in essays he published in 2011 and 2012), came to echo my own ideas about 2012. It's become clear in recent investigations in my files that Carlson was well informed of my work since late 1994, and moreso in 1995 and with my invitation (and this synopsis) sent in mid-1997. The idea of a World Age or solar era rebirth in 2012 is present here, with a death and rebirth process (a "death-rebirth nexus") of Creation Myth deities (sacrifice and return). It's a World Age renewal with the Dark rift symbolizing a birthplace ( not a doomsday). Also, Izapa is underscored as an important entry point for investigations, with the ballgame, Creation Myth, and king-making rites as places where the astronomical alignment symbolism can be found.
